The class and school really got in behind Movember this month and supported men's health. The whole school and all the male teachers sported mows for the month/day. Check out the outrageous blue slug on Mr P's face!!!!
Emma with her handle-bar "sausage" mow won the class prize but some of the other ones look spectacular as well. We'll done you good things!!

The Pegasus Digi Awards

As part of the recent iPad initiative in East Zone schools the inaugural "Pegasus Digi Awards" have been created.
There were a number of categories to enter but Room 15 chose to enter the digital photo section.
Using the iPads the class set about taking photos using composition and editing techniques they had been taught. Below this post you can view all their efforts. I think you will agree the results are very impressive indeed!!
All of these photos have been uploaded to the Digi Awards site for judging. There will be an Awards Celebration Evening held at Chisnalwood Intermediate on the 19th of September to which you are all invited.

How Tiny are We?

Had to share this amazing picture with you. The Cassini spacecraft which has been in space for nearly 10 years has arrived at the gas giant Saturn- 1.4 Billion Km's from Earth.
What makes this photo amazing is that the probe took a backwards shot of Earth and our moon.
Blue, beautiful, and tiny in the vastness of space!! Can you see your house(-:

Swimming at Queenspark

It's been really good to see the quick progress of some individuals during our swimming sessions. The class and pool is divided into three groups and the instructors do a great job of running three separate programmes based on the various skill and experience levels.
Wow!-Later on they will even have a boat for the children to fall out of (-:

Wolf Pack

In class we have been reading Jack London's books "Call of the Wild" and "White Fang". Both books are really descriptive accounts of wolves and men in the Canadian and Alaskan frozen north.
This BBC movie about the reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone National Park in the United States.
What magnificent creatures I hope you enjoy it.

5th February 2013

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

I trust you all had a restful break over the recent holidays. My family and I made the most of the great weather and have recently been spending more time down at the beach. In fact we have run into a number of Parkview people down there which has been great. This is just a note to let you know how things are progressing in class and some organisational reminders.

General

The class has settled very well into the various routines of class life and there is a happy and
 contented feel to the place.

Camp

Camp this year will be held at Blue Skies in Kaiapoi. We will be going with Room 14.  The dates are 13-15 of March. Because we use our own transport to get there the cost will be $90, sounds expensive I know but many school camps these days cost well over $100.  If you wish to “drip-feed” some of this amount off that’s fine.  If you wish to come on camp please make yourself known to me or Miss Brady in the next couple of weeks.

Homework

Please check and sign your child’s homework notebook sometime during the week.  This book also has reminders and general class information in it, so it is important that you sight it.  Chores and activities after school also count as homework e.g. swimming or music lessons or even helping with the evening’s meal.  These you can list on the “homework and reminders” page.
Your child will have a list of spelling words and a family of number facts to learn by Friday.  These lists are issued on Monday and re-tested on Friday. Your child will also be expected to read for 20 minutes each evening and watch at least 3 news broadcasts during the week.
In addition to this the children will have various activities to complete which involves the web-site - www.studyladder.co.nz. There will also be information and class happenings on the class blog at http://room15parkview.blogspot.co.nz/ (this of course can also be found at the school website). It is not my intention for homework to be an onerous activity for families but something that extends learning which is already happening in the classroom. More information will be given on this at the three-way conferences later this month. Don’t hesitate to seek me out if you have any concerns or queries. My e-mail is gary.pinker@parkview.school.nz

Best Regards
